While grilles, diffusers, and louvres all assist with the airflow or HVAC system requirements of buildings, grilles are often more versatile in their use for the supply or return of air, whereas the angle (or adjustable angle) of a diffuser or louvres slats will be used to determine the directional flow of air being supplied to a room.

You may have noticed that louvres are more likely to be seen in outdoor applications than linear grilles. In external settings, the angle of the louvres provides better protection from the elements than an open bar grille, while still providing the required airflow without restriction.
